DFG Research Training Group Baltic TRANSCOAST – Topic: Biodiversity of Benthic Baltic Sea Diatoms
Diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) are important primary producers in global ecosystems and are frequently used as indicators for biomonitoring. In light of increased disturbances and flooding events affecting coastal areas, there is a need to expand knowledge surrounding diatom communities in these changing ecosystems to obtain a reliable baseline for future monitoring. However, studies on benthic diatoms in coastal waters of the Baltic Sea are still rare, and diatom biodiversity in Hütelmoor nature reserve and its surrounding areas, the model sites of Baltic TRANSCOAST, is still yet to be investigated. Therefore, the main objective of the PhD project is to perform a comprehensive floristic study in this area, accompanied by community structure analyses. Diatom species will be identified by both traditional morphological methodology and rapidly evolving DNA barcoding techniques. Using these two approaches in parallel will facilitate the development of a reliable reference species database. Combining the results with the other studies of Baltic TRANSCOAST, the outcomes will contribute to our understanding of processes implementing biodiversity in changing coastal areas, and thus provide the best way to monitor these ecosystems in the future.
